Instagram realize that not all of its users are comfortable with their online activity being visible to the public. Including me, and maybe you too.
In response, they’ve given users the ability to appear offline on the app.
With this means is basically you’re not allowing Instagram to show if you’re online and when was the last time you were active on Instagram.
And here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can do it.
In This Post
How to appear offline on Instagram
- Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page by tapping on the icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
- Tap on the three lines in the top right.
- Tap on Settings.
- Tap on Privacy.
- Scroll down a bit and tap on Activity Status.
- Toggle off the Activity Status, and you’re done.
That’s it, you’re good to go. Instagram will not put a green dot next to your profile picture on DM anymore, and it won’t tell everyone if you’re Active now or Active 30m ago.
Benefits of turning off Activity Status
By turning off your Activity Status, of course, you will have more privacy.
No more judgement like, “Oh, she was just on Instagram an hour ago” or “Why is he online but not responding to my messages?”.
It also helps to prevent those off-hand DMs that are so easy to send when you know the person is online.
Disadvantages of turning off Activity Status
By appearing offline, you might be missing out on some points.
For example, you’re also unable to see other people’s online status, it means everyone will also appear offline to you.
If you optimize your page to gain followers and reach more people for your business, appear offline might not be the best option.
When turn off Activity Status, you’re less likely to show up on the Explore feed.
As a result, your engagement rate will decrease, and you will drive less traffic to your Instagram page.
People won’t know when you’re online to interact with you. Interacting with your followers is one of the key points of Instagram optimization – to gain a connection and build relationships.
Turning off Activity Status could bring a negative impact on your business page. Please consider turning it off on personal page only.
It’s up to you to decide whether the benefits or the disadvantages weigh more for you.
However, it’s better to turn off Activity Status on your personal account. If you’re using Instagram for your business, I recommend being active and engaging with your followers as much as possible.
That’s pretty much about it! How do you feel about Instagram’s Activity Status? Let me know in the comments below.
